Travel in Brazil – Florianópolis
Florianópolis (affectionately called Floripa by locals and non-locals alike) was named the “Party Destination of the Year” in 2009 by the New York Times – a distinction that doesn´t seem to be changing anytime soon.
Floripa is hot on the tourist scene attracting world-renowned musicians and celebrity figures such as Beyoncé and supermodel Gisele. The city has two professional soccer teams; Figueirense FC and Avaí FC. Other popular sports practiced by professionals and novices are: scuba diving, trekking, sand boarding, surfing and the ever present bikini watching.
The Island of Santa Catarina (Ilha de Santa Catarina) is the main ilsland and Florianopolis its capital city. In November it hosts the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour competition – the only one in South America. Joaquina Beach (Praia da Joaquina) pictured in the photo above has numerous surf schools. There are 42 beaches on the island in total, many accessible only by foot or boat.
Unlike other areas of Brazil, there is rainfall year-round (no dry season) with summer having the highest level of precipitation; creating a humid subtropical climate. Temperatures during the hottest months of January and February can reach 40 degrees C (104 F). During winter (July & August) temperatures can drop as low as 6 degrees C (43 F).
