  1. Ñujchu

Only 23 km (14 miles) from Sucre, Ñujchu is an old fashioned city spa, located beside the Cachimayu river where you can take baths. A colonial country property beside the river – Hacienda Huasa Ñujchu – is also a highlight which offers lodging and has a restaurant. Horseback riding tours are popular here; best to arrange through a tour agency in Sucre.

  2. Bramadero

Thirty km (18 miles) outside Sucre, there lies an idyllic refuge from the commotion of the city. Situated at the bottom of Chataquila Mountain that surrounds the city – ‘Bramadero’ as this place is known, was once a barren piece of land attached to a ranch.

Ten years ago, Mabel and Raul Carvagal, a married couple living in Sucre, bought this land to create a private initiative. By regenerating the vegetation on the mountain, they expected to coax wildlife back to the region and turn it into an ecologically protected area. There is a campground, cabins and full-service restaurant.

Visiting for a night or longer you truly feel in the heart of nature: Eucalyptus and Pine trees cover the entire mountainside and the air is incensed with the perfume that comes from their leaves. You may encounter many species of birds, anteaters, lizards and other small mammals while walking along the forest paths.

  3. Cajamarca

The Cajamarca valley is famous for its pine and kewiña forest and is located 40 km (25 miles) from Sucre. It is a protected area at the foot of the Chataquila highlands and popular for trekking excursions. There are cave paintings you can hike to and a river where you can bath in natural pools. Hotel facilities are offered by hostel “Refugio Bramadero”.

  4. K’atalla (7 falls)

At only 8 kms (5 miles) from Sucre, are a total of seven crystalline clear waterfalls in tranquil outdoor surroundings. Makes a great break from the pollution and constant hustle and bustle of city life.
