Shopping in Mar del Plata, Argentina
There are two main “shoppings” (shopping mall in English) in Mar del Plata complete with cinemas, restaurants and in one a gym. In addition, there are some great outdoor areas to go door to door looking for items, one a few blocks from the beach with discount outlet stores the main attraction.
The two shopping malls are Los Gallegos and Paseo Diagonal, located across the street from each other at Diagonal Pueyrredón #3050. Los Gallegos Shopping (Gallegos Mall in English) is larger with more stores, a McDonalds, upper level food court and cultural extension – Ciclos Cultural. You can see a list of shops here: www.losgallegos.com.ar.
Ciclos Cultural hosts public events ranging from children’s science shows, art expeditions, acupuncture, ballet, opera to specialists discussing the consequences and solutions to alcoholism. Gallegos Mall is open from 10:00 a.m. to 1 a.m. (food court) but shops close around 11:00 p.m.
Paseo Diagonal takes the prize for early 7:30 a.m. opening of its streetside cafe, closes at 10:00 p.m. The movie theater at Paseo Diagonal is Cines Ambassador. Movie schedule is online here: http://www.cinemacenter.com.ar/
Just a 1/2 block from the Cathedral at San Martin and Cordoba streets is an outdoor shopping section (pedestrians only, streets blocked off). To check it out view this YouTube video: Street Shopping in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
If you want a quick shopping trip from Miramar, at the entrance to Mar del Plata from the beach is an 8 block or so stretch of discount and outlet stores on Avendida Juan B. Justo.
Jump off the bus when you see the huge Toledos grocery store (corner of Don Orione and Avendida Juan B. Justo) and start heading towards the waterfront. Bargain after bargain available of domestic and imported clothing such as Reef surf ware.
