Videos – Markets in Cusco, Peru
Cusco is a highlight of any visit to Machu Picchu in Peru, for many as exciting in and of itself as a trip to the ancient Inka ruins. The city of Cusco is one of our featured ‘Cheap Places to Live’ in South America. The full story is here: Cusco, Peru – Cheap Place to Live.
Not only does Cusco have a main farmer’s market that can compete with the best of them in South America (such as Sucre Bolivia’s enormous three level extravaganza – Farmer’s Market in Sucre Bolivia) – on the weekends the outlying area becomes an unofficial extension of the one housed within the market building, with Peruvians from outlying areas coming into town to sell their wares.
On Sundays the area around the main market exlodes with vendors – three, four blocks deep. It’s hard to walk through in many areas as the sidewalks are plastered with blanket after blanket lined with fruits, vegetables, used clothing, knick knacks… anything you could think of selling they’ve thought of it too and are actively doing so!
We walk to Mercado Ccasccaparo which is the smaller municipal market, a couple blocks from the main market where all the tourists go.
