Grocery Shopping in Sucre, Bolivia & Price Chart of Items

Sucre has great farmer’s markets but for access to a large selection of imported deli, dried, canned and other goods (huge wine and spirits selection) you should head to Pompeya - an upscale supermarket located just a block from Plaza 25 de Mayo on España street.

Rarely have I seen in grocery stores traveling through South America jars of Garlic Black Bean sauce (yum!), Kikkoman Soy Sauce, ACT II Buttered Popcorn and Maruchan Top Ramen - great for those on a budget.

There is another grocery store – SAS – yet with a much smaller selection of products and next to nil imported items. The deli had only a couple types of cheese available for purchase, Pompeya has around ten including imported Gouda, Gruyère and Swiss.

Note On Buying Fresh Fruits & Vegetables: Both stores sell fruits and veggies mainly in 1 kilo pre-packaged bags, and only the basics (apples, tomatoes, etc.). If you need just one or two of something and a much larger selection, your best bet is Mercado Central located just three blocks from Pompeya and around six blocks from SAS. SAS does have a movie theater and parking garage attached, plus ATM machines to get cash.
