South America Living

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Chic courtyard cooking courtesy of The Four Seasons

The Four Seasons in the Argentine capital’s La Recoleta district recently opened this impressive courtyard restaurant to considerable acclaim. The double-height space is studded with rich furnishings, including a marble butcher’s table and open kitchen, and benefits from being flooded with natural light.

Executive chef Juan Gaffuri has returned to his home country after working for the hotel group across three continents. International influences abound, therefore, but the menu still majors on that most fundamental of South American staples – meat – in myriad forms. Starters include a selection of charcuterie boards; the rotisserie section features glazed pork belly with fig balsamic vinegar and whole chicken with herb butter; beef from the grill ranges from dry aged to Angus to Kobe. Elena has also rapidly established a reputation for its outstanding artisanal gelati offer. The wine list, under sommelier Sebastien Maggi, is suitably Argentinian-dominated.
